| HAMAP: Bacillus weihenstephanensis (strain KBAB4) complete proteome |
| Species code: | BACWK |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Firmicutes; Bacillales; Bacillaceae; Bacillus; Bacillus cereus group (TaxID: 315730) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Bacillus weihenstephanensis is a non-pathogenic, Gram-positive, typical facultative psychrophile generally found in soil. Phylogenic studies show that in nature it is the most active group in terms of gene exchange. Strain KBAB4 was isolated from a forest near Versailles, France. B.weihenstephanensisis unusual for a Bacillus in having 4 plasmids encoding about 240 kb of extra-chromosomal genetic material that may account for this gene exchange phenomenon. It may also include unintegrated phage. Genes coding an Nhe-like toxin were found on the largest plasmid in KBAB4. This may indicate a potential mechanism of toxicity spread from the psychrophile strain community into other Bacillus members (adapted from PubMed 17434157). |
